Dean’s Court is located within the historic centre of Bristol and provides 356 en-suite student rooms arranged in apartment clusters with self-catering and social facilities. The design sought to optimise room numbers, while providing high quality ‘home from home’ accommodation for residents. The complex nature of the site precluded the use of prefabricated rooms, however a standard shower pod design was developed and prototyped to create economies and reduce installation problems in repetition. The construction includes a ‘flat slab’ in situ concrete frame and externally insulated render cladding. Design integration of building services; in particular drainage and ventilation was critical to minimise space requirements and avoid awkward bulkheads and ducts. Bright bedrooms and kitchens with large windows and landscaped courtyard gardens make this a popular student hall.
