Sponsored by Virgin Galactic, this was our response to an invited competition to design a hotel on the moon.
On the moon there is no wind, high radiation, constant meteor impacts, no atmospheric pressure and only one sixth of the earth’s gravitational force. The footprints of every person that has ever walked on the moon are still there.
Our response was to propose the hotel in a satellite which orbited the moon, allowing the guests to view the whole of the moon from close quarters, with or without artificial gravity. But it also allowed for “safari” visits to the moon surface, where an inflatable prefabricated structure would provide a landing point and storage for emergency survival systems.
We presented our proposal to the RIBA annual conference in 2011.
