Our competition entry for four contemporary beach huts for disabled users was designed to reflect the English coastal tradition. Located on Boscombe Beach, from a distance the shelters appear as solid pitched roof structures but on approach more detail is revealed. Each hut is composed of an internal organic form of soft canvas that is protected by a larch timber ‘rib-cage’. The ribs diffuse the southern wind and sunlight, and are back-painted in vivid colours which reflects an ephemeral hue onto the canvas. A bi-folding ‘awning’ provides access to the interior which when closed protects the internal structure. The chosen materials refer to the coastal environment and are detailed to make use of traditional boat-building skills.
